Kemerovo State Medical University is a State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation. Kemerovo State Medical University provides both full time and distance learning courses in the field of medical education in Kemerovo city. The Kemerovo State Medical University was founded in 1955 as the Kemerovo State Medical Institute. In 1995, the medical school was renamed in Kemerovo State Medical University of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of the Russian Federation. Till 2014 Kemerovo State Medical University has trained 6400 students. Today Kemerovo State Medical University has 52 departments where 270 qualified teachers train 700 students every year. On September 1, 1956, 250 students of the Faculty of Medicine began its history. First-year students were received by 8 departments: human anatomy (head - associate professor E.I. Gontar-Zamotrinskaya), biology (head - associate professor E.D. Logachev), chemistry (head - associate professor A.A. Kobylin), histology (head - doctor of medical sciences A.P. Maslov), physics (head - associate professor S.A. Frangulyan), foreign languages, including Latin (head - E.M. Medvedeva), physical education (head - B.Y. Elov), the foundations of Marxism-Leninism (head - A.S. Druzhinin). The organizer and the first rector (director) of the Kemerovo Medical Institute was a graduate of the Tomsk Medical Institute, a veteran of Kuzbass health care - the chief physician of the Kemerovo Regional Hospital, Honored Doctor of the RSFSR, later Associate Professor Stepan Vasilyevich Belyaev (1903-1969). People who knew him cherish the memories of the wonderful surgeon. He was an organizer-strategist of health care, who foresaw the development of Kuzbass and future medical and social problems.
